Transforming a 350-hectare abandoned military site in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, into a meaningful public space called the Arsenal Memory Park, preserving the painful history while giving it a new social and urban purpose.

The project focuses on transforming an abandoned military site that once functioned as a clandestine detention, torture, and extermination center during the military dictatorship (1976-1978) where many people lost their lives. The design proposes a large urban park combined with an interpretation center that educates visitors about past events and creates awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future. The concept is based on 'Pentimento' - the condition where hidden layers of the past exist beneath the present surface, only becoming visible over time. The design uses angular and sharp geometries to express the emotional intensity of the site's past. The fragmented plan form reflects disruption, violence, and instability, creating a spatial language that makes visitors feel the history rather than just see it. As the plan progresses, rigid forms begin to open, connect, and soften, symbolizing the transition from past to present to future.

Technické informace

The site is located in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, at latitude 26.73 South and longitude 65.28 West. The terrain is mostly valley in the foothills of the Andes with a subtropical semi-humid climate. The program includes a concert hall, cafeteria, amphitheatre, admin spaces, gallery, water bodies, commercial premises, pavilion, AV room, conference room, chamber spaces, classrooms, and entry areas. Roof forms feature geometric extended roofs and shaded structures. Vegetation includes Jacaranda trees symbolizing fleeting memories, Silver Birch symbolizing purity and renewal, Duranta as transitional landscape elements, and Bougainvillea representing resilience and emotional survival. Site contours range from 510 to 550 meters elevation.
