Rejuvenating cultural roots through the design of an ethnic cultural institute in Rangamati, Bangladesh.
A thesis project focused on creating an ethnic cultural institute in Rangamati that aims to rejuvenate and preserve the cultural roots of the region's ethnic communities.
Area: 6.13 acre
Structural Detail : The structural system follows a hybrid construction strategy. This is a combination of steel frame with engineered timber elements. Steel columns, beams, and trusses form the primary load-bearing structure. This ensures stability and efficient spanning. Cross-laminated timber panels are used for floor and roof decks to reduce dead load. The layered system supports a lightweight roof assembly while responding effectively to the site’s topography and climatic conditions.
Material : The material palette emphasizes locally sourced, sustainable materials, primarily bamboo, timber, and thatch, combined with engineered wood products. Woven bamboo panels, bamboo boards, and bamboo wattle panels are used for wall and enclosure elements improving ventilation, daylight filtration, and cultural expression. Cross-laminated timber panels provide structural decking with improved strength and durability. The thatched roofing layer contributes to thermal insulation and climatic responsiveness.
