Idea projektu

The interior of the STU Rectorate building on Vazovova Street in Bratislava is rooted in a single guiding principle: function defines identity. Rather than imposing a uniform aesthetic across all spaces, the design allows each room to develop its own character — shaped by its role within the institution.
Color becomes the primary instrument of this differentiation. While a warm red anchors the more representative and hierarchically significant spaces — the Rector's office and formal reception areas — it does not dominate the entire scheme. Meeting rooms, secretariat zones, and working corridors are free to draw from a broader palette: deep greens for focused deliberation, warm neutrals for collaborative spaces, cooler tones for administrative environments. The color is not decorative — it is communicative. It tells the visitor, and the occupant, where they are and what kind of interaction is expected of them.
This approach reflects a deeper understanding of institutional architecture: a rectorate is not a single experience, but a layered sequence of encounters — from the public corridor to the private office, from the formal board meeting to the quiet work of a secretary. The design honors that layering, while holding the whole together through a consistent material language of dark wood, white textured surfaces, acoustic slat ceilings, and refined steel detailing.
The existing interwar rationalist shell is treated with full respect — new elements are introduced as a contemporary counterpoint, never in competition with the original structure.

Popis projektu

The project addresses the interior redesign of selected spaces within the Rectorate of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, located on Vazovova Street. The building, dating from the interwar period, represents a significant example of rationalist and functionalist architecture in Slovakia. The design approach prioritizes maximum respect for this existing architectural heritage while modernizing spaces that no longer meet contemporary standards of representation, spatial orientation, or workplace comfort.
The intervention focuses on the administrative wing (Block A) across the 3rd and 4th floors, encompassing the prorectors' offices, the Rector's office, two meeting rooms, secretariat spaces, and connecting corridors with kitchenettes. The proposal reorganizes the floor plan layout, improves visitor orientation, and establishes a clear, refined circulation axis throughout the building. Particular emphasis is placed on enhancing the representative character of spaces intended for receiving guests, hosting negotiations, and presenting the university's activities.
The design concept is built around a modern, functional, and visually coherent environment that reflects the identity of a technical university. New architectural elements custom joinery, acoustic slat ceilings, glazed partitions with integrated blinds, and a carefully curated furniture selection are sensitively integrated into the historic fabric of the building. The proposal adheres to the principles of universal design throughout.
