Idea projektu

"The Earth Remembers" — Architecture is submerged, fragmented, and integrated with the land, allowing memory to remain embedded in the site rather than imposed upon it. The project reclaims a site of violence as a collective memory landscape, ensuring the past is remembered while supporting a shared civic future.

Popis projektu

The Interpretation Centre at the Arsenal Memory Park in San Miguel de Tucumán is designed as a journey through memory, transforming a former clandestine detention, torture, and extermination center from Argentina's dictatorship into a memorial park. The architecture expresses a movement from Darkness to Compression to Awareness to Reflection to Openness to Civic Life. The design uses submerged forms, fragmented structures, and landscapes to express buried trauma and interrupted narratives. A linear experiential journey moves visitors from compression and darkness to openness and reflection, symbolizing awareness and healing. Key programmatic elements include an Administration building (submerged rectangular volume), Historical Exhibition Pavilion (fragmented concrete planes emerging from the ground), Memorial Art Gallery (square silent chamber with reflection pool and natural top light), Immersive Audiovisual Showroom (black subterranean void with no windows), Conference Complex (broken geometric mass reconnected), and Memory Plaza (large flat plane cut by thin linear fissures with names inscribed along cracks).

Technické informace

Materials used include exposed concrete (expressing permanence and gravity), brick lattice (corridor and facade), steel (structure and span), stone (grounding and memory), glass (skylight, bridge), and iron rod (statue). The site is located at latitude 26.75° South, longitude 65.28° West in a subtropical humid to semi-humid climate. Predominant soil is alluvial (river-deposited) mixed with sandy loam and silty clay. A 200m radius protection zone exists around the sensitive historic area. The site includes existing barracks, administration building, workshops, guard posts, and water tower.
