FAUM Indigenous Centre : Choosing Perspective

The FAUM Indigenous Centre is an interior design project that explores the concept of humility through perspective. Inspired by Indigenous teachings and the Seven Sacred Teachings, the project investigates how space can encourage reflection, connection, and understanding. Through movement, light, atmosphere, and materiality, the design invites users to experience shifting perspectives, reinforcing the idea that learning and growth occur when we choose to see beyond ourselves. The project was developed as part of EVIE 4010 Interior Design Studio 3.2 at the University of Manitoba.

The project proposes an Indigenous Gathering and Knowledge Centre located within the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. The design includes gathering and smudging spaces, storytelling areas, library and study spaces, Indigenous student support offices, faculty workspaces, and community-focused meeting areas. The spatial organization emphasizes interconnectedness, cultural learning, and collective experience. Circular forms, transitional pathways, filtered light, and natural materials create an atmosphere that supports storytelling, knowledge sharing, reflection, and community engagement.

Technické informace

The project consists of a multi-level interior environment featuring custom millwork, built-in seating, gathering and smudging areas, office spaces, library and study zones, and accessible circulation systems. The material palette incorporates recycled wood, natural prairie grasses, stone flooring, porcelain tile, ribbed glass, clear glazing, acoustic ceiling systems, and custom lighting installations. The design integrates reflected ceiling plans, custom furniture specifications, detailed FF&E schedules, accessibility considerations, and interior architectural detailing developed through Revit and digital visualization workflows.
