Idea projektu

A special place that connects one's 'self' to the world, like a boat floating on the current, going with the flow. The project explores vulnerability as an architectural concept in the context of Taiji, a town known for traditional whaling in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.

Popis projektu

The project is situated in Taiji, a town in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, known as the birthplace of traditional whaling. The town is home to museums and research facilities dedicated to cetaceans, with efforts underway to preserve whale culture from various perspectives including culinary traditions, tourism, and research. The debate over commercial whaling continues globally, with foreigners opposed to whaling visiting the area, leading to restricted access and high walls around the fishing port. The design explores ways to create a place where we can engage with others in a gentle manner, accepting others who share this world. The surrounding area is rich in diverse elements including a whale sculpture, whale pen, Morisura Bay, and a nearby railway station, making it a site that inspires creativity.

Technické informace

The design methodology involves dividing a single plane into long, narrow sections and creating undulations. While taking scale and placement into account, control points are determined to construct the space. By expanding the space while maintaining certain constraints, it becomes a space with a complex order. The intertwining, expansion, and movement of space come to life. Site plan at 1:2000 scale.
