Idea projektu

Many living organisms in nature adopt a more compact form in order to protect themselves in times of danger, creating a safe protective shell around their bodies. This instinctive behavior forms the conceptual foundation of the project.

While functioning as a public square that supports urban life and social interaction under normal conditions, the structure transforms into a protective shelter during times of crisis.

Popis projektu

This project is designed as a hybrid urban infrastructure that functions as a social and public square under normal conditions, while rapidly transforming into a temporary shelter and emergency coordination hub during disasters.

The modular timber structures, nested within one another, expand outward from the center through a rail-based movement system and transform into independent living units. Thanks to its prefabricated and mobile design, the system enables the establishment of essential shelter spaces within just 6–12 hours after a disaster.

Located in Balıkesir Republic Square, the project supports daily urban life through cafés, event spaces, and recreational areas. In times of crisis, however, it evolves into a flexible living network that provides shelter, gathering spaces, and essential support functions.

Inspired by protective mechanisms found in nature, this transformable architectural system demonstrates how public spaces can serve not only everyday urban activities but also become resilient infrastructures capable of supporting communities in post-disaster situations.

Technické informace

The structure undergoes five transformation phases: Phase 1 - Closed Form where all modules are closed inward in a compact state; Phase 2 - Initial Opening where modules start to open outward and the form begins to expand; Phase 3 - Partial Opening where modules continue to open outward expanding the form further; Phase 4 - Further Opening where modules expand more clearly into a radial form; Phase 5 - Fully Open where all modules are open achieving the final form.
