Idea projektu

The project explores the future of the traditional bazaar, a vital economic, social, and cultural institution that continues to serve the majority of urban residents in Bangladesh. Despite its importance, rapid urban growth has created severe challenges including congestion, informal encroachment, inefficient circulation, poor waste management, and unhealthy market conditions.

The idea of the project is to reconceptualize the traditional bazaar through a problem centric approach. Rather than replacing the existing market culture, the project seeks to understand its complexities, identify its underlying issues, and develop context sensitive solutions that preserve its social and economic value while improving functionality, health, and sustainability. The goal is to create a more organized, inclusive, and adaptable marketplace that responds to present needs and future urban growth.

Popis projektu

The project is based on the redevelopment of Kalibari Bazaar in Khulna, Bangladesh. Through site observation, stakeholder interviews, mapping, and contextual analysis, the existing market condition was studied from both macro and micro perspectives.

The proposal addresses key challenges including parking congestion, informal vendor occupation, loading and unloading conflicts, waste management failures, and the mixing of dry and wet market functions. Multiple design alternatives were developed and evaluated against factors such as accessibility, circulation, spatial performance, adaptability, comfort, and safety.

The final design introduces a vertically organized market structure that improves circulation, accommodates formal and informal economic activities, enhances environmental conditions, and creates a more efficient relationship between commercial activity and public space while retaining the character of the traditional bazaar.
