Puntarenas, Costa Rica is a coastal area that faces a critical scenario of urban vulnerability due to uncontrolled growth, inadequate environmental management, and projected sea-level rise by 2100. As a response to this crisis, the project proposes a new master plan that reimagines the city by expanding over the water: a futuristic urban vision that ensures the permanence of Puntarenas within its coastal environment while strengthening its port identity and ecological resilience. Within this framework, Sensescape emerges as one of the master plan's key interventions: a tourist complex that combines tradition and innovation under the concept of interconnection and encounter, redefining the relationship between people, nature, and local culture.
Sensescape is a tourist complex inspired by the organic forms of the ocean, integrating sensory gardens, public spaces, restaurant, technology zones, holographic rooms, sensory cinema, a hotel and interconnected structures that generate a fluid experience between accommodation and recreation. Beyond traditional hospitality, the project offers immersive experiences through native vegetation, advanced technologies, and activities rooted in Puntarenas' cultural identity. The design democratizes public space and fosters a unique bond between locals and visitors within an inclusive and ecological environment.
The project is located in Puntarenas, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. The complex is organized through interconnected structures articulated by sensory gardens and open public spaces. Sustainability strategies include solar energy systems, water conservation, and environmental preservation measures to ensure integration with the coastal ecosystem. The design responds to the threat of flooding and sea-level rise projected for 2100, incorporating bioclimatic and ecological criteria to guarantee the long-term permanence of the intervention within its coastal setting.
