Idea projektu

The project proposes a Faculty of Architecture in Stare Miasto, Wrocław (50-155), located next to the former church now housing the Museum of Architecture. This project is a response to the following question:

How can architecture be taught through architecture itself?

The project is based on the notion of duality, a fundamental condition of architectural practice. Architecture evolves between tradition and experimentation, theory and practice, order and freedom. This duality becomes the core concept of the faculty.

Popis projektu

The project aims for a merged expression in which tradition and experimentation complement each other rather than opposing two architectural languages. Learning the rules, challenging them, and turning them into new opportunities is how the faculty transforms into a didactic building that embodies the essence of architectural education.

The building is divided into 2 equal and complementary parts:
1. The first represents the traditional mode of teaching, composed of modular, square classrooms with rational proportions, dedicated mainly to theoretical learning. This part expresses proportions, modularity, etc.
2. The second part explores a more dynamic and experimental approach to learning. It is organized around a large open space of 20 meters in height, free of fixed partitions and illuminated from above. Platforms are integrated to allow students to work, rest, and exchange ideas in an informal and inspiring environment.

The dynamic space directly faces the Museum of Architecture, acting as a spatial extension and encouraging interaction between the school, the city, and the museum.

The link between these 2 parts is ensured through dynamic vertical circulation, conceived as an architectural element more than just simply taking stairs up. Staircases connect all levels and guide users through the building, while an outdoor exhibition extension allows students to present their work to museum visitors, reinforcing the dialogue between education and architectural culture.

Technické informace

The volume is conceived as a simple box, respecting the urban fabric of the surroundings and integrating harmoniously with the brick architecture. Brick is therefore adopted as the main material, to ensure continuity with the context and allow a contemporary interpretation. The façade develops a gradual transformation: bricks are traditionally clad at the upper levels and progressively rotated toward the lower levels, creating a subtle parametric effect through light and shadow.
