Singapore has been facing food security issue because of its limited land for agriculture, and it only depends on importing foods from overseas. Therefore, sustAIM comes up with a solution as a Future Hawker Centre that promotes future foods that consist of Algae, Edible Insect and Mushroom to Singapore's public consumption due to their low requirements to grow without soil as growing media. People in the Hawker Centre would enjoy their food and mingle with their family and friends in order to maintain Hawker Culture value in the space.
sustAIM consists of three main buildings that are Hawker Centre, Farming and Lab, Recycling Centre, and Future Food Market in outdoor area. Hawker Centre is for visitors to have future food as their meal in dining area and also for people to learn how to cook and process Algae, Insects and Mushrooms into appetizing future food for human consumption. Farming and Lab is a space to grow and cultivate Algae, Insects and Mushrooms in mass production delivered to Future Food Market as food ingredients for people to purchase. Recycling Centre is a place where all of the food waste from the Hawker Centre is gathered and processed through decomposition to produce compost for future food farming usage. All of the programs in the space are connected through the loop cycle.
Since the site is previously an abandoned former power station, the Hawker Centre preserves the industrial concept by applying industrial materials such as concrete material for walls, metallic steels, electrical pipes for railing, steel structure for canopy at outdoor area, hoist and crane in Macroalgae pool to locate the Algae. Some of the sustainable materials made from Future Foods elements implemented in the space such as Algae Photovoltaic Panel in the outdoor canopy and skylight, Mycelium Board wall panel as Hawker Centre soundproof material, and Kinetic Tiles on the floor to convert human footsteps into electric energy.
