Idea projektu

The project addresses the gradual decline of the Khulna Divisional Library, a modernist public building constructed in 1964 that once represented knowledge, civic identity, and cultural life in southwestern Bangladesh. Over time, physical deterioration and changing public needs have reduced its relevance within the city.
The proposal introduces the concept of Timeless Convergence, where conservation becomes a tool for renewal rather than preservation alone. The design aims to protect the architectural heritage of the library while transforming it into a contemporary cultural environment that reconnects the building with the community.

The annual "Ekushey Boi Mela", historically associated with the site, becomes a key inspiration in reactivating the library as a shared public place for learning, exchange, and memory.

Popis projektu

The project proposes a conservation-led transformation of the Khulna Divisional Library into an active cultural infrastructure that reconnects heritage with contemporary public life. The existing modernist structure is preserved as the primary architectural framework, maintaining its spatial clarity and material identity, while new interventions are introduced as a distinct layer to accommodate evolving functions.
The program expands beyond traditional library use to include flexible reading spaces, exhibitions, workshops, and informal gathering areas. A key driver of the design is the integration of the Ekushey Boi Mela, which activates both the building and its surrounding open spaces, allowing seasonal transformation between everyday use and large-scale public events.
Climate-responsive strategies, including shaded transitional spaces, natural ventilation, and durable materials, address the region’s humid and saline conditions while improving long-term performance. Through this approach, the project positions the library as an adaptable and enduring civic landmark where preservation and transformation coexist.

Technické informace

The project adopts a conservation-sensitive structural strategy that preserves the original reinforced concrete and brick masonry system while introducing lightweight and reversible interventions. A secondary steel space-frame truss system is inserted beneath the existing roof to reinforce structural stability without altering the external architectural expression. Bolted connections are used instead of welded joints to ensure reversibility and minimal impact on the heritage fabric.
Environmental performance is enhanced through passive design strategies. The roof system integrates ventilation gaps that facilitate hot air extraction while drawing in cooler air, improving thermal comfort through natural air circulation. Shaded transitional spaces, perforated façade elements, and controlled daylight openings further reduce heat gain and enhance indoor conditions in response to Khulna’s humid climate.
New program elements are integrated as flexible layers within the existing structure, using durable, locally appropriate materials suited to saline conditions. Accessibility and building services are upgraded to meet current standards while preserving the architectural identity.
