Project idea

An interpretation center on a former clandestine detention center site in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina, transforming a site of memory, trauma, and remembrance into a cultural and educational facility.

Project description

The project is located on a 350-hectare site in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina, previously used as a military arsenal (army base) that served as a clandestine detention center from 1976-1978 where torture and execution took place. Key elements include Galpón 9 (main detention building), mass graves (identified and unidentified), and barracks buildings. A 200m radius zone is designated as a protected/sensitive area. The design concept evolves from basic mass forms, introducing curvatures to create open courtyards and landscaped areas connected with nature. The form development includes creating classrooms, an assembly room, and a main hall. The site is located in the northern metropolitan region with rapid urban growth and unplanned urban sprawl, creating barrier/dead zones and disconnected land parcels.

Technical information

Site area: 350 hectares. Climate type: subtropical humid. Summer temperatures approximately 30-40°C, winter temperatures approximately 10-20°C. The design incorporates site restrictions including a 200m radius protected/sensitive area concept line. Urban context analysis addresses surrounding metropolitan growth patterns and connectivity issues.
