Project idea

Rethinking the Atghar-Kuriana area in Pirojpur through a commerce-based cultural approach, integrating commercial activities with cultural identity along a riverfront setting.

Project description

For over two hundred centuries, traditional floating haats have been the lifeline of riverine communities in
Bangladesh. These spaces were not just markets but lively trading hubs of local goods, social and cultural activity
where people gathered to buy goods, share news, and strengthen community bonds. Each haat carries its own unique
character, shaped by local customs and geography. Inspired by the diverse environments of haat-bazars,this study
focused on preserving the traditional settings of Atghar-Kuriana area known as the biggest guava floating market in
Bangladesh. Through interviews with stakeholders and site visits, the research considers conservation efforts
acknowledging surplus potential in local production and promoting environmental stewardship of indigenous haats.
The proposed design idea is to keep these markets of relevance in the future by enhancing economic prospects,
fostering cultural dynamism, and preserving the canal bank ecosystem. By visualizing floating haats as multifunctional platforms, this study envisions a future vision of heritage, ecology, and economy converging to empower
riverine dwellers.
