Project idea

A new municipal library in Roztoky designed to create a true community living room, transforming a simple civic building into a welcoming space open to the surrounding area, functioning as a 'living room for everyone'.

Project description

The design of the new library in Roztoky stems from the desire to create a genuine community second home. The goal was to transform the original concept and create a generous space that opens to the surrounding environment. The building uses natural materials and thoughtful proportions so that it functions as a barrier-free place that protects visitors from the outside hustle while becoming a space not only for discovering new stories but primarily for joy, gathering, and mutual sharing. The program includes a library, café, and a community space called 'Plechárna'. The building features an extensive green roof, movable sun shading, panoramic niches, and a community courtyard. The massing is developed through basic volume, shifting, communication paths, and welcoming gestures.

Technical information

The structural system uses EOCOCON load-bearing system with reinforced concrete columns and acoustic partitions. The building envelope is detailed at 1:100 scale. Energy systems include FVE (photovoltaic) panels and water management scheme. The building features reinforced concrete structural columns, extensive green roof, and large-format glazing with minimalist attic detailing. Underground parking is accessed via a garage entrance with an open forecourt. Thermal and daylighting analysis was performed using DIAL+ software, comparing scenarios with and without shading at 25°C threshold.
