Project idea

The idea is to revive the historical urban pattern as a place for communal life of the city. The main principle is a simple, solid form respecting the traditional character of the town and the situation of the historical core of Stará Boleslav. The risk in the pattern is gently broken and reveals inner processes. This organic rift in the building symbolizes openness, drawing life from the street into the commercial center.

Project description

The design responds to the specific character of the area 'Na Dolíku' in Stará Boleslav. The goal is to create a complex of buildings that provides appropriate communication with the surrounding development while fitting into the area and creating a new, strong focal point. The design solution responds to broader relationships in the territory and divides into a commercial and a relaxation/social part through a courtyard concept. The project is a commercial center for the town of Stará Boleslav, organized as a set of interconnected volumes with distinctive curved wooden roof forms that break the rigid exterior envelope.

Technical information

The building consists of two floors with floor plans showing retail and commercial spaces. The structural solution integrates timber massive elements for the light-colored wood facade and interior cladding, dark wood for interior details, exposed concrete for exterior elements, and a false-seam metal roof covering. The concept progresses from spatial limits through division into units (retail, services, workshops, community) to the final design with articulated facades and integrated roof walls. Construction drawings show sections at elevations of 0.000, 4.100, 7.355, and 13.000.
