Project idea

A farewell space at Ďáblický hřbitov (cemetery) in Prague 8, conceived as a composition of two mutually approaching forms symbolizing the transition between the earthly and the transcendent, serving as a place of symbolic farewell and last contact between the deceased and the survivors.

Project description

The design responds to the architectural context of the Ďáblický cemetery in Prague 8, incorporating elements of cubist and geometrically composed architecture. The prominent vertical form symbolizes the departure and transcendence, rising as a surface of raw exposed concrete serving as a background and space for the final farewell. The object works with the contrast between light concrete and dark cortén steel surfaces, creating an intimate interior space with a backdrop for the bereaved. The spatial solution integrates public cemetery pathways with the intimate space of the farewell ceremony. The building's orientation allows natural light to enter the interior during ceremonies, and the overall composition symbolically works with themes of memory and remembrance.
