Reviving local spirit through inclusive social hubs - transforming the abandoned Ex Hotel Tilamas in Prawirotaman Village into an Adaptive Social Hub using the Unfolding Petal concept to address gentrification and bridge local residents with tourists.
The project addresses the gentrification facing Prawirotaman Village due to Yogyakarta's tourism boom, where indigenous residents are increasingly marginalized and social spaces are disappearing. The former Tilamas Hotel, a 1,075-square-meter abandoned plot, is transformed into an Adaptive Social Hub through the Unfolding Petal design. Based on the Transformative Collective Space approach, the design creates a sculptural building shaped like a blooming flower that functions as a medium for community empowerment, providing an inclusive interaction space, an MSME zone, a cultural amphitheater, and a local community space. The concept integrates Rooted Tale (contextual architecture), Envolving Space (adaptive environment), and Natural Rhythm (living culture) principles. The hub serves diverse users including local residents, tourists, students, employees, kids, sport communities, and various UMKM (micro business) operators including food, batik, and canting education.
The site is located at Ex Hotel Tilamas, Jl. Prawirotaman No.34B, Brontokusuman, Kec. Mergangsan, Kota Yogyakarta, 55153. Site analysis addresses air ventilation, noise, sun orientation, and potential views. The design incorporates bamboo structural elements (Struktur Bambu), bamboo pavilions, flexible multifunctional spaces, workshop areas, cultural areas, UMKM market zones, and responsive adaptive environments. The 1,075-square-meter plot features contextual architecture integrated with adaptive environmental design strategies.
