The task was to design a modular work-from-home type apartment unit within the compact footprint of 4 x 4 m.
The idea came from the observation that as architecture moves towards standardized processes like modular construction, the feeling of personal identity within residential spaces is gradually diminishing, especially now that homes are turning into dynamic spaces which also serve as temporary or regular workspaces due to the work-from-home culture. One for All proposes a dynamic, modular living unit, which can adapt to the users specific needs, profession, lifestyle, or even time of day, providing a flexible space which can accommodate the multitude of activities that constitute modern living.
The design proposes a compact 4 x 4 m flexible living unit. The entrance opens into a large multipurpose space lined with dynamic modular floor units, which may rise to certain preset heights depending on use-case, the configurations of these 16 blocks form various kinds of spaces ranging from living spaces with seating and coffee tables, to full fledged workspaces. Towards one side is the utility wall, which consists of various modular units, the layout of which may be customized as per user needs. The exterior face of the unit is covered by a dynamic paneled facade, the panels can move along a fixed track, controlling the daylight within the interior space, and the views from it. An AI assistant, in the form of a robotic arm attached to the ceiling, aside from controlling the various dynamic functions, also is mounted with a projector which provides the user a movable screen that may project onto any surface within the home, countertop, wall, or even the floor.
The module is constructed with a simple steel frame structure, prioritizing disassembly and modularity. A layered wall system fitted within the frame provides the external covering.
