The project responds to the need for new urban housing in Munich by adding a lightweight rooftop extension to an existing healthcare and office complex at Candidplatz. The main idea is to create a new residential layer above the city without using additional land, while transforming the existing structure into a more active, sustainable and community-oriented place.
The proposal creates a “Roof City” composed of modular housing units, shared spaces, green roof terraces and public functions on the lower levels. It combines short-term and long-term housing with community areas, coworking, a restaurant, a street-art gallery and outdoor spaces. The project works with layering, stepping volumes and greenery to improve the quality of living above a busy urban traffic node.
The extension is designed as a lightweight modular timber structure placed above the existing reinforced concrete frame. A new 4.2 × 4.2 m structural grid supports flexible apartment layouts and long-term adaptability. New CLT vertical cores provide access and structural stability, while green roofs, terraces and loggias improve the microclimate and help protect the housing from traffic noise.
