Project Declaration: Hearth & Horizon
Project Scope: A thoughtful home designed for creative professionals. It brings together sustainable building practices, a safe and accessible space for elderly family members, and strong personal security.
1. A Space for Creative Living
We designed "Hearth & Horizon" as a dedicated retreat for creatives. The goal is to provide a quiet environment for deep focus, while also offering open spaces that spark inspiration. We used operable timber louvers and natural light to make the spaces feel adaptable and connected. With a dedicated "Loft Zone" for uninterrupted work and a "Living Core" for socializing, the house naturally supports both intense study and mental relaxation.
2. Sustainable and Cost-Effective Design
To keep the project economically sustainable, we prioritized local materials like natural stone and regional wood finishes. This approach cuts down construction costs and supports local craftsmanship. We also focused heavily on passive design—using smart solar positioning and natural cross-ventilation. This not only aligns with green building standards but also significantly lowers daily energy bills for the homeowners.
3. Inclusive Living for Senior Citizens
A key priority was making sure elderly family members feel connected, not isolated. By lifting the main house on concrete stilts, we created an open, easily accessible ground floor. This layout provides a direct, step-free connection between the garden and the main living areas. It allows seniors to comfortably join in on daily family activities and stay socially active without having to navigate difficult stairs.
4. Privacy and Security
We tackled security by designing the house in physical layers. A heavy, central "Stone Core" houses the mechanical units and acts as the structural anchor of the home. Elevating the main living spaces naturally separates the private areas from the public ground floor. With a single, clear circulation path, it's easy to control who enters the home. The result is a house that feels open to the city views but remains completely secure and private for the family.
1. Architectural Layout and Flow
To perfectly suit a creative professional's lifestyle, we organized the house into 3 distinct levels. At the ground level, concrete stilts create an open, welcoming space that flows right into the garden and pond. Moving up, the main floor serves as the heart of the home, featuring an open-plan living room, dining area, and kitchenette. Finally, the top level offers a quiet loft and a spacious roof terrace. This upper sanctuary is perfect for deep work and relaxation, complete with sweeping views of the city skyline.
2. Climate-Responsive and Green Design
We made sure the house is environmentally friendly and naturally comfortable. The exterior features double-layered wooden screens and adjustable louvers that block out harsh heat while letting in plenty of soft, natural light. By designing the spaces to catch the breeze, the house stays naturally cool, drastically reducing the need for air conditioning. Outside, we included a "Biodiversity Buffer"—a landscaped area filled with native plants that protects the local ecosystem and creates a natural green shield around the home.
3. Community Support and Smart Security
We focused on smart economics by using local, durable materials like natural flat stone and regional wood. This cuts down on transportation costs, lowers the initial budget, and supports local artisans. On a social level, the step-free ground floor ensures that elderly family members can easily enjoy the garden and family time without the strain of stairs. For security, we anchored the house with a solid "Stone Core" and designed a clear central pathway. This layout gives the family a great view of who is coming and going, keeping the home completely safe and private.
1. Structure and Materials
We designed the pavilion to be highly durable and deeply grounded in its environment. It sits on reinforced concrete stilts, creating a breezy, 9-foot open space on the ground floor that naturally welcomes you in. The core of the house is built from solid stone—this acts as the structural anchor, keeping the building stable while hiding the mechanical utilities. Visually, the house transitions beautifully from sturdy stone masonry on the lower levels to warm, local wood finishes higher up. To top it off, an insulated concrete roof deck protects the entire sanctuary.
2. Dimensions and Spatial Experience
The house is scaled to feel incredibly spacious without losing its cozy, intimate vibe. It stands at a total height of 28.5 feet. Inside the main living area, we kept the ceilings at a generous 9.5 feet, making the space feel open, airy, and free of any confinement. Moving up, the roof terrace sits 21 feet above the ground, giving you wide-open views of the horizon. To connect these spaces, we designed a comfortable 4.5-foot wide central staircase with custom timber steps that feel great to walk on.
3. Climate Control and Natural Light
Instead of just building solid walls, we designed the exterior to adapt to the weather. The house is wrapped in a timber grid with adjustable wood louvers. You can easily shift these screens to block out harsh morning sun or open them up to let a cross-breeze flow right through the living core. At the very top, a glass skylight pulls soft, natural daylight deep into the upper lounge and the rooms below. By working alongside the nearby pond and garden, this setup naturally cools the house, drastically cutting down the need for air conditioning.
4. Interior Layout and Daily Flow
We laid out the interior to clearly separate busy, social activities from quiet, focused time. The ground floor serves as an inviting entryway with a reception area, lots of greenery, and clear pathways. Moving up to the main floor brings you to the heart of the home—an open-plan space where the living room, dining area, and kitchenette all connect smoothly. The highest level is the quietest part of the house. It features a secluded loft zone perfect for deep study or rest, which steps right out onto a peaceful roof terrace and lounge.
