The concept of this design is to create a safe haven for children. I therefore worked with the idea of a smaller oasis separated from the surroundings and providing a refuge. The kindergarten area is separated by a higher fence, which is made of separate pillars so that it transmits light and does not completely cut off the area but optically separates it from the university area and neighboring plots. Thanks to this, it also does not contrast so much with the surroundings, since from the perspective of the person coming in, the pillars copy and extend the cuboid that is the garage and later when a person enters the area, they only see the separate kindergarten building.
The shape is softer because it copies the natural paths of people and promotes a sense of security. It is also a shape that looks playful in combination with round windows. However, these windows also have practical reasons. I placed them primarily in the sleeping areas and bathrooms, where the goal is to reduce the amount of light compared to the large windows in the other rooms and at the same time ensure some privacy.
The design of the kindergarten at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Brno Technical University is developed as a concept of a 'safe oasis' located on the university campus in the form of an extension on the green roof of two-story garages. The shape uses organic, soft lines and playful circular windows, which, in combination with white plaster and spruce wood, create a welcoming and warm expression of the building. This design is also complemented by soft pastel colors, which appear playful in the context of a kindergarten. The area of the building is 676.5 m² and is divided into 3 sectors. The playrooms and bedrooms are located to the southeast, the technical facilities are oriented to the northeast behind the building, and the dining room is located on the northwest side of the plot. The windows of the play rooms are oriented to the east to receive the early sun, and these spaces are complemented by a multifunctional dining room oriented to the west, also serving for sports or clubs.
The architectural solution works with greenery and sunlight, while the building is surrounded by four different thematic zones - from paved tartan areas for running through playgrounds to an educational atrium for growing plants. The entire area is optically separated from the surroundings by fencing and, to promote inconspicuousness, protected by a vegetation roof, thus ensuring ecological sustainability and a seamless connection with the surrounding parks Kraví Hora and Kadetka. The building includes entrance, locker room, hallways, children's work gallery, playrooms, bedrooms, children's toilets, teachers' toilet, showers, dining room/multi-function room, laundry room, bathrooms, management room, staff locker room, staff room, staff hygiene facilities, heating and food storage.
The kindergarten is located on the roof of a reinforced concrete garage with a frame structure and therefore the kindergarten is also designed as one. The supporting system of the kindergarten is placed on beams located every 7.5m along the length of the garage. The dimensions of this garage are 110x17.4m. The roof of this garage is green and will therefore be used as a kindergarten garden. The built-up area of the kindergarten is 676.5 m².
