The project consists of the reconstruction of a Renaissance chateau in the town of Velké Němčice (South Moravian Region, Czech Republic) and the revitalization of the entire area. The chateau is located on a slight rise in the southern part of the Městečko square in the central part of the town. Together with the nearby churches of St. Václav and St. Vít and the old town hall, it forms the trinity of the most important historical buildings that define the town centre. Due to its location on the main communication routes of the town, it serves as a landmark and a symbol of the renewal of the cultural heritage of Veľké Němčice.
During the renovation, the key is to respect the monument protection of the castle, preserve the character of a Renaissance castle, and also strive to revitalize the village. The design takes into account the current state of the building and avoids invasive interventions that would disrupt its essence. Of the current structures, those that are not of monumental value are affected, and their other use will be beneficial for the concept of the design, the main purpose of which is to revitalize the cultural center of the village. The design also retains original elements such as the Renaissance decorated columns at the main entrance or the murals on the 2nd floor.
The main goal was to revive the castle and the entire cultural center of the town. It is subordinated to both the architectural and layout solutions. The idea behind the project is to restore its lost glory. The key was the division of the facade using window frames, lintels, crown cornices, cordon cornices and the division of windows – in the ground floor area double 6-pane windows and on the first floor double 10-pane windows, with the lower part divided into 6 and the upper into 4 panes. The color of the facade is in soft colors - broken white in combination with white accents in the dividing elements of the facade. The roof covering will be burnt beaver and in part of the new extension copper covering, similar to the church. The new element will be a new extension and in part of the currently unsuitable extension. It will be created by a glass wall and will bring light into the deeper spaces of the castle. At the same time, the outlines of vine tendrils created by artistic sandblasting will be added, which will give the space an artistic touch from both the interior and exterior. The 1st floor will house a small information center, library, café, exhibition space and guest restrooms. The café will have direct access to the exterior for outdoor seating. The 2nd floor will house the ceremonial hall, municipal office – office space, mayor’s office, meeting room, kitchenette and restrooms. The basement will be used as a wine cellar with a shared rentable social room with separate restrooms. The smaller basement in the southern part will not be used or accessible to the public. The attic will not be used. The design uses natural materials in light shades and colors – oak wooden floors, lime plaster, limestone paving. To ensure the building is barrier-free, a glass elevator is located in the new extension.
The castle is located in the cultural center of the village, where events such as the May Day or festivals are held.
Currently, a small square around the castle serves this purpose, which is in an outdated state. The aim is to functionally and visually connect the entire area of the center, as well as create public spaces for community events or leisure activities. The proposal considers the creation of a new public space for the village, new communications, planting new greenery and a parking lot.
A square will be created in the back of the proposed land, which is adapted to the number of visitors to community events. The main pedestrian communication will connect the castle with the church of St. Václava and Víta, while secondary paths around the castle and the new square will be connected to it. The new tree planting will be arranged so that it does not shade the castle or obstruct the view, especially when approaching from the north and south sides of the castle. The new parking lot (10 parking spaces, 2 disabled spaces) will be left in approximately the same location as the current one, but its shape will be modified to fit the new design concept.
In the design, we are adding a glazed extension, which will be created using a modular columnar facade system made of high-strength steel profiles with glass and a copper powder coating. In the extension spaces, we are considering removing a small part of the ceiling structure above the 1st floor near the glass facade, which would create a view through the two floors and highlight the artistic sandblasting. In the case of removing the current openings, a partition wall will be used, while maintaining the reversibility of the interventions.
