Project idea

A new building on Prague's Old Town Square that complements the historic urban fabric, featuring a glazed facade with green rooftop terraces, designed to fill the gap left by the former town hall wing.Visualizations enhanced/rendered with the assistance of AI tools for environmental context.

Project description

The project proposes a contemporary intervention on Prague's Old Town Square, adjacent to the Old Town Hall and the Church of St. Nicholas. The design features a multi-story building with a transparent glass and timber facade that allows visual permeability while respecting the scale and character of the surrounding historic architecture. The rooftop incorporates extensive green terraces with trees and vegetation, creating an elevated garden visible from the square. The building is shown across four seasonal views demonstrating its integration into the historic context throughout the year.

Technical information

The Old Town Hall Extension (Prague, INSPIRELI AWARDS) is a multi-functional public and administrative building constructed with a flexible flat-slab reinforced concrete skeleton. The exterior features a combination of vertically articulated local natural stone cladding and high-performance structural glass systems. Its sustainable infrastructure is defined by multi-layered green roofs planted with Sedum and Thymus for natural insulation and stormwater retention, fully integrated with rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and high-efficiency mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
