Project idea

The Breathing Arena is a multipurpose indoor stadium designed for approximately 2,000 spectators, accommodating football, basketball, volleyball, and various events. Inspired by natural airflow, the building "breathes" through roof ventilation gaps, and a central ETFE skylight that provides natural daylight and passive cooling. The main objective is to create a climate-responsive hybrid facility that addresses the growing need for sports, recreation, and community activities in the area while promoting sustainability and environmental performance.

Project description

This project features a multipurpose sports court designed to accommodate basketball, five-a-side football, volleyball, and other indoor activities. The building integrates a multi-level roof system that enhances natural ventilation, while a double-skin perforated aluminum façade and adjustable vertical louvers regulate solar heat gain and daylight penetration. For renewable energy generation, photovoltaic panels are integrated into the roof, taking advantage of the region's high solar exposure. In addition, green roof areas contribute to passive cooling and improve environmental performance.
To enhance accessibility and public engagement, the project includes a welcoming entrance plaza that serves as a gathering space for visitors. To ensure activities beyond sporting events, the facility incorporates learning and community spaces within the stadium, complemented by a restaurant and a public gym located adjacent to the main building.

Technical information

The main structural system consists of steel framing supported by reinforced concrete pad foundations. The roof is formed by long-span steel Pratt trusses with 70 meters and 40 meters of span, that create a flexible column-free interior suitable for multiple sports and events. The building envelope incorporates ETFE skylights for, photovoltaic panels, perforated aluminum cladding, and vertical adjustable louvers to optimize daylight, ventilation, and energy efficiency.
