Shikor is a Cultural Hub for Bangladesh inspired by the meaning of the word “Shikor,” which translates to roots in Bengali. The project explores themes of cultural identity, belonging, migration, and connection by creating a place where Bangladeshi culture can be celebrated and shared within Kuala Lumpur’s multicultural environment. The architectural concept is derived from the idea of roots spreading, connecting, and adapting to new surroundings, symbolizing both cultural preservation and growth.
Located in Bukit Bintang near Jalan Alor, Shikor functions as a cultural platform that brings together the Bangladeshi community, local Malaysians, and international tourists through food, art, workshops, performances, and social activities. The project is designed as an open and welcoming community hub that encourages cultural exchange and interaction. The building contains a variety of functions including bazaar spaces, workshops, retail areas, multipurpose halls, food stalls, social gathering spaces, and rooftop dining areas. Through these programs, the project reconnects people with their cultural roots while creating a vibrant destination that contributes to the social and cultural life of Kuala Lumpur.
The architecture employs a fragmented and layered form inspired by movement, weaving culture, river journeys, and organic root systems. The spatial organization is distributed vertically, with public functions such as bazaars, food stalls, and multipurpose spaces located on the lower levels, workshops and retail spaces positioned on the intermediate levels, and indoor-outdoor dining spaces placed on the rooftop. Environmental performance is achieved through courtyards, open terraces, perforated terracotta screens, timber louvers, and naturally ventilated circulation spaces that respond to Kuala Lumpur’s tropical climate. The primary material palette consists of exposed concrete, terracotta jali screens, timber, bamboo, glass, and steel, creating a balance between cultural expression, sustainability, and contemporary architectural identity. Fire safety systems, smoke ventilation, emergency staircases, and accessible circulation routes are integrated throughout the building to ensure safety and functionality
