Project idea

In Between is a nature inspired study pod designed to provide a peaceful and comfortable learning environment within a busy alley setting. The project responds to the increasing need for quiet spaces where public can read, discuss, and relax between the alley. Inspired by the organic form of a protective cocoon and the flow of natural elements, the structure creates a transition space "in between" the indoor and outdoor environment.

The design aims to promote concentration, mental well-being, and social interaction through a semi-enclosed pavilion that offers both private and shared study areas. By integrating natural light, ventilation, and ergonomic seating, the study pod encourages productive learning while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Project description

The proposed project is an outdoor study pavilion consisting of a central quiet pod surrounded by a shared study area beneath a sculptural canopy structure. The canopy is formed by a series of curved ribs that wrap around the pod, creating a sense of enclosure while maintaining openness and accessibility.

The central pod functions as a focused reading and study space equipped with integrated bookshelves and seating. Around the pod, movable chairs and tables allow user to customize the space for group discussions, informal meetings, or individual sessions.

The project is strategically located within an alley environment, providing a relaxing after long walk. The open layout allows natural airflow and daylight penetration, reducing dependence on artificial environmental controls while enhancing user comfort.

Technical information

The proposed structure utilizes a reinforced concrete foundation to ensure stability and durability, supporting a steel-framed canopy system that forms the primary architectural feature of the pavilion. The central study pod is constructed using light oak timber cladding, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere while contrasting with the dark metal framework.

Timber or composite wood flooring is used throughout the space to enhance comfort and maintain a natural aesthetic. The canopy design incorporates a central skylight opening that maximizes daylight penetration while allowing natural ventilation to flow through the structure. Energy-efficient LED pendant lighting is suspended beneath the canopy to provide adequate illumination during evening use.

The pavilion is designed to accommodate approximately 2–6 users within the shared study area and 1–3 users within the quiet pod. Sustainable design strategies, including passive cooling, daylight utilization, and durable weather-resistant materials, are integrated to minimize environmental impact and maintenance requirements while ensuring long-term functionality and user comfort.
