Project idea

The school is located in Norilsk, that is known as one of the most depressing cities in Russia. Blizzards and the polar night make daily life difficult. Yet more than 150,000 people live in this permafrost zone, many of whom are children. The idea behind the “Kaleidoscope” school project is to fill the school with bright, colorful light displays, despite the short daylight hours.

Project description

Starting from elementary School each color represents a specific function: active zones — such as the light tower — are pink. Knowledge zones, such as the learning corner and the small library for younger students, are yellow. Relaxation zones, including the soft seating areas, are blue. Color accents, lighting schemes, and interactive elements—these are the design elements that define the space. In contrast to the snow-covered gray landscape outside the window, these elements inspire motivation and positivity in the students.

In High school part the school's central atrium is equipped with technology that allows for changing lighting scenarios. During breaks, bright, colorful lighting is activated, while during classes, a calm, diffused light is used to create an atmosphere conducive to productive learning. The library, media zone, and gym for upper-grade students continue to use color-coding based on function: red for sports and active work in the coworking space, and blue for relaxation in the media center. The arts and crafts room is decorated in yellow and green, colors associated with knowledge and concentration. It is divided into sewing and cooking areas, and all students are welcome to use it.
