The project of the university campus in Surgut

Leonid Markov

Project idea

Project topic: the project of a university campus and campus in the city of Surgut.

The city of Surgut is located in the north of Russia, in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.

The main problem of living and building in this region is severe weather conditions.
The sharply continental climate, long cold winter, sudden temperature changes, etc. That is why the main task of the project was to try to fit into the given climatic conditions, creating a comfortable modern complex capable of becoming a place of attraction in the city for both students and teachers, as well as for residents of the city.

Project description

The design site is located in the southeastern part of the city, on the banks of the floodplain of the Ob River. The area of the territory is 35 hectares.

The territory is artificially washed and is intended for the construction of university infrastructure, which is part of Surgut State University.

The construction of both the campus and the campus is due to a serious shortage of academic space, a shortage of living space for students and the lack of related infrastructure, such as a sports complex, a concert hall, etc.

The functional zoning of the entire campus is based on the principle of distinguishing quiet and loud zones separated by a large courtyard. The university campus is located directly on the left side, and the sports complex, a dormitory complex and a youth center are located on the right.
The campus is also divided into 2 accessibility zones, separated by a small boulevard. The zone is accessible to all citizens, all objects of which are connected by a public embankment, and the zone is intended only for students and university staff.
For greater security, a car-free environment is located between the functional zones. The only car passage runs along the perimeter of the territory, providing the necessary access to all infrastructure facilities.
As I have already said, the main objective of the project is to combat climatic conditions. It is this idea that underlies the education of both the campus and the entire campus.
The visual appearance of the project is inspired by the visual style of suprematism.
The shaping of the campus building is based on several simple rectangular shapes, according to which the functions are divided - academic buildings, a sports complex, a cultural center, an administrative building and the main building. The connecting core of the building is the winter garden, which permeates the entire volume and forms functional links between all buildings. The accent is an element made in the form of a ring raised above ground level, in which laboratory rooms are located.
(1st floor plan)
The Winter Garden is the central link connecting all the other buildings of the campus. In addition to the function of moving from office to office, there are areas for study and extracurricular activities on its territory.
Thus, functions strictly separated by buildings intersect in one central open multi-light space, forming, so to speak, a single organism.

Technical information

A special feature of the formation of the entire campus, and a continuation of the idea of protection from harsh climate, is the creation of a system of insulated tunnels on the surface of the earth, running through the entire territory and connecting all infrastructure facilities into one continuous network.

Speaking in more detail about the formation of a campus, I would like to pay attention to the formation of a complex of dormitories.
The dormitories consist of 3 main blocks - residential, public, insulated tunnel. This system is needed to ensure the insolubility of the premises, with dense buildings between the buildings of the dormitories.
In the direction from north to south, the residential block decreases in number of floors, thereby not preventing light from entering, while the public block remains unchanged, creating a modular
connection with insulated tunnels.
The insulated tunnel system itself consists of 2 types. A large tunnel running from the campus to the youth center, and its direction supports the formation of a student campus, and small tunnels that branch off from the large one to the rest of the infrastructure.
This creates continuous connections between all buildings, allowing you not to be afraid of weather conditions.
The facade solution of the university campus is made in a minimalistic style, using light metal panels, with color accents on the entrance groups.
The choice of round windows is dictated by the use of this shape as an accent element in the entire project, but unlike other round elements, which are perceived mainly from a height, these are clearly visible from the height of the human eye and, moreover, round windows visually distinguish academic buildings from the rest.
All visual and architectural planning solutions are aimed at creating a complex of objects united by a common idea and a common style, such an Object that can become a new place of attraction in the city of Surgut.
