Project idea

A museum of personality, designed as a bachelor's thesis project at the Department of Architecture.

Project description

The project presents a museum building integrated into an existing urban context, featuring a combination of contemporary architectural elements with a traditional pitched-roof structure. The design includes museum volume rising , incorporating vertical cladding and a traditional tile roof.

Technical information

The proposal is based on a contrast of materials. The majority of the original building retains its original material character, consisting of solid fired brick masonry, while the extension is designed as a contemporary volume with a reinforced concrete load-bearing wall system and lightweight façade cladding.
The original entrance to the family house, accessed via a four-step staircase, is preserved, although the entrance area is enlarged to create a more open and representative appearance. The existing spatial layout of the original building proved suitable, allowing for an efficient adaptation of the interior to meet new operational requirements. The ground floor is assigned a new visitor-oriented function. From the entrance hall, visitors have access to public sanitary facilities and a workshop space intended for youth activities. This floor also contains a janitor’s room and a storage area for cleaning supplies. Access to the basement level (Level -1) and the attic floor (Second Floor) is provided by staircases separated by secured doors intended for staff use only.
The basement retains its original function as a technical services area, with the staircase separated from the technical rooms to enhance fire safety. The second floor of the original building changes its function from residential use to storage space for exhibits.
The main entrance to the entire complex is located within the extension and leads through a foyer with a reception area that extends vertically through both floors up to the roof level. Directly behind the reception are open cloakrooms with storage facilities and accessible toilets. These spaces are flanked on both sides by corridors, ensuring smooth visitor circulation in both directions.
Adjacent to these areas, on the right-hand side, is a connecting transitional space providing access to the original family house, while a large gallery space extends straight ahead. Both the gallery and the connecting space provide seamless access to the courtyard, creating a physical and functional link between the original house and the workshop building. The gallery culminates in a cinema hall with two independent entrances.
The second floor of the extension is connected to the second floor of the original building and serves as administrative facilities for staff, including offices, sanitary facilities, and a kitchenette. Together, the original structure and the contemporary extension form a cohesive complex that preserves the architectural identity of the existing building while accommodating new cultural, educational, and administrative functions.
