Project idea

This museum explores the history of colonialism and the struggle for liberation through architecture. The design transforms historical narratives into spatial experiences allowing visitors to physically journey from spaces of confinement, darkness and oppression into open, light-filled environments symbolizing freedom and resilience. The project aims to preserve collective memory while inspiring reflection on the enduring strength of communities that fought for independence.

Project description

The museum is organized as a sequential experiential journey. Visitors begin in enclosed and dimly lit exhibition spaces representing the restrictions and injustices of the colonial era. As they progress through the building, spaces gradually become brighter, more open and interconnected symbolizing resistance and liberation. The museum accommodates permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, educational spaces, archives, community gathering areas, performance spaces and outdoor reflection gardens. Through architecture, the project creates an immersive narrative that commemorates the fallen heroes.

Technical information

The building combines reinforced concrete, steel and glass to symbolize the colonial times and locally sourced materials for independence, creating contrasting spatial atmospheres. Controlled daylighting strategies are used to emphasize the transition from dark to light spaces, while passive ventilation and shading devices improve environmental performance. The structural system supports large exhibition halls and flexible gallery spaces allowing the museum to adapt to future exhibitions and community activities.
