Project idea

The concept of Urban Vertical is inspired by the industrial heritage of New York lofts and the dynamic vertical character of the city. The project explores the relationship between openness, height, and functionality, transforming a duplex apartment into a contemporary living environment. Exposed brick walls, steel elements, large windows, and generous ceiling heights create an authentic industrial atmosphere while emphasizing the spatial identity of the interior.

Project description

Urban Vertical is a duplex loft apartment located in New York, designed in an industrial style. The open-plan ground floor accommodates the living, dining, and kitchen areas, with the living room defined by a sunken floor level that creates a distinct social space. A lightweight steel staircase connects the two levels and serves as a central architectural element.

The upper floor contains the private zone, including a bedroom and a bathroom with a freestanding bathtub. Large floor-to-ceiling windows maximize natural light and strengthen the visual connection between the interior and the urban landscape. The project combines raw industrial materials with contemporary comfort, creating a functional and characterful living space.

Technical information

Urban Vertical is a residential interior design project developed as part of the 4th-year Architecture Studio, Summer Semester, at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (UACEG), Sofia, Bulgaria. Located in New York, the project explores the industrial aesthetic through a duplex loft apartment characterized by exposed brick walls, steel elements, generous ceiling heights, and large industrial-style windows. The spatial organization emphasizes verticality, with a steel staircase connecting the social areas on the lower level to the private spaces above. By combining raw materials, open-plan living, and contemporary comfort, the project reinterprets the atmosphere of New York’s historic industrial lofts within a modern residential environment.
