Project idea

The Fishing Research and Education Hub is a coastal development project in Rasheed, Egypt, that addresses environmental, economic, and social challenges affecting the fishing sector. Inspired by the fishing net as a symbol of connection, the project brings together research, education, fish production, processing, and community engagement within an integrated maritime ecosystem that promotes sustainable fishing practices and long-term coastal resilience.

Project description

The project creates a multidisciplinary hub that serves fishermen, researchers, students, and visitors through a combination of research laboratories, educational facilities, public exhibition spaces, fish processing units, boat and gear maintenance workshops, monitoring towers, and fish farming areas. Through a network of bridges, waterfront platforms, and public spaces, the project strengthens the relationship between scientific innovation and local fishing communities.

Technical information

The project is presented at 1:500 site scale and 1:200 building scale, including master plan, floor plans, sections, elevations, and detailed construction studies. The structural system combines reinforced concrete foundations for land-based buildings and pile-supported platforms for over-water structures to respond to coastal and flood-prone conditions. Steel framing systems are utilized for the research, industrial, and maintenance facilities, while a tensile net-inspired canopy structure provides shading and improves outdoor environmental comfort. The fish processing facility incorporates specialized cold storage units with insulated envelope systems and controlled refrigeration spaces. The boat maintenance facility is designed as a floating structure equipped with docking platforms, repair areas, and vessel service zones. The project also includes aquaculture research laboratories, monitoring towers, fish farming platforms, educational facilities, public exhibition spaces, waterfront decks, and bridge connections integrated within a resilient coastal infrastructure framework.
