Project idea

NI-CO Experience Centre is a conversion project that transforms the former heating plant of the Nickel Smelter in Sereď into a modern educational and cultural destination. The proposal preserves the site's industrial heritage while introducing interactive exhibitions, learning spaces, and community facilities. Its main objective is to revitalize a significant brownfield and create a new landmark that connects history, technology, and public life.

Project description

The project focuses on the adaptive reuse of the former heating plant within the Nickel Smelter complex in Sereď. The design includes the conversion of the boiler hall, administrative facilities, filtration station, and associated industrial structures into an experience centre featuring exhibition spaces, a library, FabLab, lecture hall, café, workshops, and public areas, complemented by landscape and public space improvements.

Technical information

The project involves the adaptive reuse of a former industrial heating plant, originally constructed as a steel and reinforced concrete structure with brick infill walls. The proposal preserves the existing load-bearing system while introducing new steel structures, inserted floors, and contemporary glazed elements. The design incorporates exhibition spaces, educational facilities, workshops, a library, a lecture hall, and a café. Architectural interventions respect the original industrial character of the building while meeting current functional, safety, and accessibility requirements.
