Interweave emerged from observing two growing societal challenges: the increasing social isolation among senior citizens and the declining opportunities for meaningful intergenerational interaction among children. While elders often experience loneliness and a loss of purpose, children are growing up with limited connections to older generations. The project proposes an intergenerational daycare centre that brings these age groups together in a shared environment, fostering learning, companionship, care, and a sense of belonging through everyday interactions.
Interweave is an intergenerational daycare centre designed to support both children and senior citizens through shared experiences and community engagement. The project includes activity spaces, reading and storytelling areas, creative learning zones, multipurpose interaction spaces, dining facilities, therapeutic outdoor environments, and support services. The spatial planning is organized around interconnected communal areas that encourage spontaneous encounters, collaborative activities, and social exchange. By creating opportunities for interaction, the project aims to enhance emotional well-being, active ageing, social learning, and community building across generations.
The design introduces barrier-free planning, universal accessibility, and age-inclusive spatial strategies to accommodate both children and senior citizens. The space is organized through a network of interconnected activity zones, communal spaces, and therapeutic environments that encourage interaction while ensuring safety and comfort. Natural lighting, visual connectivity, ergonomic furniture, non-slip flooring, acoustic considerations, and clear wayfinding have been integrated to support the physical and cognitive needs of diverse users. The project emphasizes flexibility, accessibility, and social engagement through thoughtful interior planning and spatial design.
