Project idea

A threshold between city, landscape, and ecological conservation, a center dedicated to the conservation and research of endemic species of the Lomas de Lucumo, Pachacamac, Peru. The project addresses the critical intersection between expanding urban borders and fragile seasonal ecosystems. It aims to establish an architectural model that does not dominate the landscape, but rather emerges from it, serving as an educational and scientific beacon that mitigates human impact while fostering public awareness and environmental stewardship.

Project description

The project proposes a center dedicated to the conservation and research of endemic species of the Lomas de Lcuumo, Pachacamac, Peru. The architecture adapts to the natural elevations of the terrain, minimizing the impact on the hill and strengthening the relationship between city and nature. The proposal integrates rainwater and fog harvesting strategies, as well as conservation platforms linked to the landscape. Through pathways and spaces for contemplation, the project articulates conservation, research, and territory.

Technical information

The structure features a timber post-and-beam construction system organized through a 3-meter structural modulation that directly adapts to the slope of the terrain. Rather than resting flat, the architectural volumes are deeply inserted into the topography, creating a stepped, terraced arrangement with inclined and fragmented forms that optimize visual connections to the landscape. The design utilizes open lattice roof frameworks and strategic orientations to facilitate natural drying processes and cross ventilation. Furthermore, environmental strategies are physically embedded into the build: channels integrated into the architecture convey seasonal water from rainwater and fog harvesting, sustaining intermediate spaces specifically designated for the regeneration of endemic flora.
