Project idea

The Learning Canopy is a community-based educational hub designed for underprivileged children in Colas Nagar, Puducherry. Inspired by the form, structure, and spatial qualities of a tree canopy, the project transforms a previously vacant urban site into an inclusive learning environment that promotes education, interaction, creativity, and community engagement.

The design derives its architectural language from the natural elements of a tree—canopy, trunk, branches, and shaded gathering spaces—to create a welcoming and climate-responsive educational facility. The project aims to provide a safe, accessible, and inspiring space that supports learning, social development, and community participation while strengthening the relationship between architecture and nature.

Project description

The project proposes a compact community learning center developed in collaboration with NGOs and local stakeholders to address the educational needs of children living near the teacher colony in Colas Nagar.

The spatial organization follows an organic planning approach, creating interconnected learning, gathering, and activity zones around a central courtyard. Inspired by the protective nature of a tree canopy, the building integrates indoor and outdoor learning environments, shaded seating areas, community spaces, and flexible educational facilities.

Natural ventilation, filtered daylight, and passive cooling strategies are incorporated through bamboo roofing systems, perforated jali walls, glass bottle walls, and clerestory openings. The design encourages social interaction, environmental awareness, and experiential learning while fostering a strong sense of belonging within the community.
