Project idea

Alandur Anubhavam – Echoes of Everyday Life is an adaptive reuse and conservation project that aims to revive the historic Alandur Market in Chennai. The proposal preserves the market's architectural heritage, cultural identity, and collective memory while transforming it into a vibrant community-centered destination. Through sustainable interventions, traditional market experiences are reimagined to reconnect people with local food, commerce, and everyday social interactions.

Project description

The project focuses on the restoration and revitalization of the existing colonial-era market structure through adaptive reuse strategies. It introduces a series of experiential spaces including market streets, dining courtyards, gathering spaces, and cultural interaction zones while retaining significant heritage elements. The design integrates sustainability, community engagement, and local craftsmanship to create a contemporary public realm that celebrates Alandur's history and living culture.

Technical information

The project involves the conservation of existing masonry walls, arches, and traditional roof structures while introducing lightweight sustainable additions such as timber-framed pergolas, jute geotextile shading systems, stained-glass louvers, and climate-responsive courtyard spaces. Passive ventilation, daylight optimization, rainwater-sensitive design strategies, and eco-friendly materials including brick, lime plaster, timber, terracotta tiles, and recycled components are incorporated to enhance environmental performance while maintaining the heritage character of the market.
