Project idea

A tiny library designed as a roundhouse structure using cylindrical geometric forms fused together, integrating organically curved architecture with the natural landscape to foster a deep connection with nature and community learning.

Project description

The Roundhouse Library is a 250 sqm site project located on Veeramamunivar Street, Colony Nagar Park, Pondicherry. The design comprises cylindrical forms fused together with circular fenestrations and curved glazing that provide dynamic visual interest while ensuring visibility and connectivity between indoor and outdoor environments. The site is near a teacher's colony and residential buildings, shaded by mature trees, with calm surroundings supporting inclusivity, safety, and a playful learning environment. The program includes an entrance, play area, staff area, OTS (outdoor teaching space), and scoop areas. Brick jaali walls are used for light and ventilation, while the material palette includes fluted MDF, rattan, and beige veneer to blend function with warm, tactile aesthetics. The design features a rooftop that provides additional communal learning space, circular reading windows, garden pathways, collaborative reading spaces, and a separate sanitary facility with an open-air theater shaded by trees.
