Scale is a multifunctional waterfront destination located on Sobieszewo Island, directly on the banks of the Martwa Wisła River. The project aims to create a contemporary recreational hub that combines hospitality, wellness, gastronomy, and leisure within a cohesive architectural composition.
The concept draws inspiration from the traditional arcaded houses of the Żuławy region and the island’s rich fishing heritage. The design interprets these local references through a modern architectural language, establishing a strong connection between the built environment, the riverfront landscape, and the cultural identity of the place.
The name “Scale” embodies the project's dual narrative. It refers both to the fish scale pattern that inspired the roof cladding and to the architectural notion of scale and integration, reflecting the idea of bringing diverse functions together into a unified and harmonious whole.
The development consists of two primary building volumes connected by a lightweight suspended bridge that serves as both a functional circulation element and a compositional feature. This solution preserves key visual corridors toward the river while creating a unified architectural ensemble.
The larger volume accommodates the public functions of the complex. It includes a restaurant with panoramic glazing overlooking the water, a covered viewing terrace, a seasonal ice cream and waffle kiosk, and guest accommodation located on the upper level. The design maximizes visual and physical connections with the surrounding landscape, enhancing the visitor experience throughout the year.
The second volume houses the wellness facilities, including saunas with direct access to an outdoor cooling pool and a spa area with treatment and massage rooms. Positioned to provide privacy and tranquility, the wellness zone offers visitors an immersive experience closely connected to nature.
At the river level, the development incorporates marina support facilities designed to serve boaters and visitors using the waterfront. This area includes sanitary facilities and public restrooms, a harbour master’s office, and a water sports equipment rental. Direct access to the riverside promenade and docking infrastructure enhances the functionality of the marina while strengthening the connection between the complex and the Martwa Wisła waterfront.
A series of covered and semi-open outdoor spaces extends the functionality of the buildings beyond their enclosed interiors. These transitional zones encourage year-round use and strengthen the relationship between architecture, water, and landscape.
The project features a modern service and hotel facility designed with a robust, mixed structural scheme. The underground level consists of a monolithic reinforced concrete structure that functions as a fallout shelter / temporary displacement place (MDS in Polish). Due to the site's proximity to the waterfront and high groundwater levels in Gdańsk-Sobieszewo, the building is safely supported by a heavy-duty, 60 cm thick reinforced concrete foundation raft. It is thoroughly protected with bitumic waterproofing and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation. The above-ground floors consist of a reinforced concrete structure and glass curtain walls. The distinctive mansard roof features a 42° slope covered with flexible titanium-zinc scales fixed on system clips. All escape routes, doors, and window systems utilize advanced, fire-rated aluminum profiles ensuring full compliance with high-standard technical, acoustic, and fire safety regulations.
