Shaped as an inverted funnel, the structure acts as a protective shield during disasters; in the post-crisis phase, it transforms into an open and inviting living space. The design is based on humanity's most fundamental instinct: gathering around a fire (center).
Radial Otağ features a healing core and breathing shell concept. The circular staircase at the center serves not only for circulation but acts as a luminous core distributing light through an oculus into the interior. Massive wooden service blocks function as structural supports carrying the large roof while organizing the plan and guiding circulation toward seating areas. Mechanical wooden panels on the outer layer close during crisis moments, isolating and protecting the interior. In the social phase, these panels lift, allowing the building to breathe and fully integrate with the landscape. The building includes a relief soup kitchen, café, and community kitchen functions.
The structure consists of a timber lattice structure with kinetic wooden panels, an oculus top opening, service blocks as structural supports, and a central core serving as both circulation hub and light spine. Sustainability features include local and natural materials with timber structure and low carbon footprint, passive climate control through natural ventilation and daylight, green integration with vegetation and inner gardens, and renewable energy independence through solar panels.
