Project idea

The design approach begins by addressing the context of teen pregnancy, often resulting from sexual violence or juvenile delinquency. This situation can lead to significant psychological conditions such as trauma, depression, and stress. Given that humans are deeply connected to their physical environment, these conditions manifest somatically in individuals with PTSD.

This physical manifestation triggers the four common trauma responses (4Fs), which underscores the necessity for architectural principles that soothe or alleviate the burden on trauma survivors. Ultimately, this leads to the application of Trauma-Informed Design as the primary framework for the project.

Project description

The project aims to transform the shelter for pregnant women and infants by utilizing a trauma-informed design framework. Centered on the concept name "NALA"is a sanskrit term for "heart" or "center". The design prioritizes a non-institutional, active, and socially supportive environment with layered areas to ensure the healing journey remains the focus. The plan rectifies suboptimal zoning by creating a separate entrance for the kindergarten to isolate public and semi-public spaces from private living quarters, thereby enhancing privacy and security.

To address trauma responses such as "fight," "flight," or "freeze," the design incorporates biophilic elements like dry gardens and vertical greenery, a therapeutic color palette based on ko-kong (2023), and warm, layered lighting to foster a sense of belonging. By providing dedicated spaces including private bedrooms, counseling rooms, yoga rooms, and workshops the design establishes the necessary boundaries between public and private zones to support residents in rebuilding their identities.
