The goal of this project is to design the reconstruction and extension of the House of Culture, including the modification of its parterre in the city center, with the goal of integrating a new function of a municipal library. The area under consideration is the existing building of the House of Culture, situated adjacent to a vast green space. The proposal focuses on a new typological and operational layout of the building, creating adequate spatial conditions for the municipal library, and providing an architectural response that respects the scale and character of the surrounding development.
This project focuses on the comprehensive revitalization, architectural restoration, and expansion of the existing House of Culture in Nové Mesto nad Váhom, integrating a new municipal library to transform the building into a vibrant, modern multicultural hub. The urban concept seamlessly connects the facility with the adjacent vast green space of Hurban’s Park (Hurbanove sady) and improves pedestrian permeability through six strategic entrances tailored to natural public movement.
The architectural proposal establishes a dialogue between the original monumental structure and a new transparent extension, separated by a central light-filled atrium. The functional layout is divided into four levels: the underground floor houses a parking garage for 22 vehicles and technical facilities. The first floor serves as the main entrance hall, communication hub, and primary open-shelf library zone following an 80% open-access concept. The second floor is dedicated to specialized study areas, individual study rooms, and community seminar spaces. The third floor features a rooftop café with relaxation zones and external terraces, offering panoramic views and allowing for independent operation. The entire design respects the scale of the surrounding urban fabric while creating a high-quality community and educational environment.
The project handles a total site area of 11,172 m², with a total built-up area of 2,116.3 m², where the new library extension accounts for 521.3 m². The structural system of the extension is designed as a reinforced concrete skeleton. Its columns-based structural network ensures a high degree of spatial flexibility, visual lightness, and a fluid barrier-free connection between the original building and the new addition.
The material and envelope concept utilizes a sophisticated double-skin facade system. The primary lightweight thermal envelope is complemented by a secondary outer layer consisting of vertical frosted glass lamellas. This elements-grid fulfills both an aesthetic and a rigorous technical function: it naturally filters direct sunlight, softens indoor lighting, prevents glare, and provides optimal acoustic performance necessary for library and study zones. The building consists of 3 above-ground floors and 1 underground floor, providing an enclosed volume of 6,698.71 m³ and featuring 22 integrated underground parking spaces.
