ASTITVA AKRITI is a Women Empowerment Centre working towards making the historic artisan district of Kumartuli in Kolkata inclusive and a space for women to learn, create, work, and lead. The project is a response to the lack of economic opportunities, absence of public infrastructure, and lack of safe community spaces for women artisans and residents based on the cultural identity of the neighborhood.
The proposal draws on the traditional craftsmanship of Kumartuli to create contemporary spaces for skill development, entrepreneurship, social interaction and cultural exchange. The architectural concept draws inspiration from the weaving and clay craftsmanship process, symbolizing resilience, collaboration, and growth. The project aims at strengthening the independence of women without compromising the culture of the city by integrating education, livelihood, community participation, childcare, wellness, and public engagement on one campus.
Ultimately, ASTITVA AKRITI aims to build an ecosystem where architecture acts as a catalyst for empowerment, dignity, and sustainable urban growth.
The project is located on a strategically located urban site in Kumartuli. The project is a multi-functional community hub for women and local artisan community.
The programme will include:
Studios for vocational training and skills development
women-run businesses and co-working spaces
local craft galleries
Multipurpose community hall for workshops, cultural events
Public Library & Learning Resource Center
Childcare centre (Crèche) to allow working mothers to participate in training and employment

The design promotes pedestrian connectivity, energizes public streets and creates a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor community spaces. The overall planning promotes inclusivity, accessibility and public engagement throughout the year with respect to the existing urban fabric of Kumartuli.
The project is designed using climate-responsive and context-sensitive architectural principles that respect the historic urban character of Kumartuli while providing contemporary community infrastructure.
Key technical features include:
Passive design strategies maximizing natural daylight and cross ventilation
Modular planning allowing flexibility for different community activities
Barrier-free universal accessibility throughout the campus
Landscape design incorporating shaded courtyards, green pockets, and community gathering spaces
Integration of sustainable drainage and rainwater management strategies
Energy-efficient lighting and naturally ventilated circulation spaces to reduce operational energy demand
Material palette inspired by locally available brick, exposed concrete, terracotta textures, and handcrafted elements reflecting the artisan identity of Kumartuli
Public open spaces designed to strengthen pedestrian movement and improve social interaction between the centre and surrounding neighbourhood
The project emphasizes sustainable construction, cultural continuity, user well-being, and long-term community resilience while creating a safe and empowering environment for women.
