Project idea

The concept of the design is based on the fundamental idea of connecting two separate parts of the city that once formed a single historical entity. This gave rise to the concept: “from the castle to the Danube,” which is intended to naturally guide visitors through the area as they discover the various nooks and crannies of the city walls. In the design, these are fully accessible to visitors, with each bastion serving a different purpose. The public space design is complemented by the Staromestská Plateau, which raises questions about the future of transportation in the city center while reducing the traffic artery and returning it to pedestrians. The design’s materiality naturally guides pedestrians through the area, distinguishing between modern and original architectural forms.

Project description

The scope of the project included addressing urban planning connections with the restored western city walls; the creation of the Staromestská Plateau involved covering a busy traffic artery, and its narrowing created a new public space in the moat, which enhances the presentation of the entire wall complex in its original location. The entire project consists of the development of the details of the architectural study.

Technical information

The technical parameters are most significantly influenced by the structural design of the Plató Staromestská bridge, which consists of precast concrete elements, while the other layers of the structure are adapted to the use of the public space. Near the city walls, the materials were unified, which led to an ambiguous interpretation of the walls’ significance.
