Project idea

The Sa Đéc Flower Village Cultural and Community Center is envisioned as a catalyst for cultural revival and sustainable development. By connecting education, tourism, and local flower-growing traditions, the project creates a place where heritage is preserved, shared, and transformed into opportunities for future generations.

Project description

Sa Đéc Flower Village, located in Đồng Tháp Province in the Mekong Delta, is one of Vietnam’s oldest and most renowned flower-growing villages, with more than 100 years of horticultural heritage. Beyond supplying ornamental flowers nationwide, it represents a unique cultural landscape where agriculture, waterways, and community life have evolved together. Today, however, the village faces declining flower prices, an aging farming population, and the gradual loss of traditional knowledge.

The Sa Đéc Flower Village Cultural and Community Center is conceived as a multifunctional hub that reconnects people, culture, and agriculture. Located in the heart of the village, the project integrates exhibition spaces, community gathering areas, educational workshops, flower cultivation experiences, tourism services, and local product displays into one continuous spatial experience.

Inspired by the seasonal rhythms of the Mekong Delta, the architecture adapts to the annual flooding season, flower cultivation cycles, harvest periods, and local festivals. During the flood season, traditional floating flower gardens are brought into the building, transforming seasonal changes into an immersive cultural experience while reinforcing the identity of the craft village.

Beyond serving as a cultural destination, the center functions as a platform for education, innovation, and collaboration by connecting flower growers, local businesses, researchers, and visitors. Through sustainable tourism, knowledge sharing, and community participation, the project aims to strengthen local livelihoods, preserve horticultural heritage, and inspire future generations to continue the legacy of Sa Đéc Flower Village.

Technical information

The project occupies a 9,500 m² site in the heart of Sa Đéc Flower Village. The architectural design adopts a modular timber structure combined with steel connections, elevated above the ground to respond to the Mekong Delta's seasonal flooding. Permeable open spaces, operable wooden louvers, and naturally ventilated corridors maximize daylight, airflow, and thermal comfort while reducing energy consumption. Flexible spaces accommodate exhibitions, workshops, flower markets, community events, and educational activities throughout the year. The project was developed and documented using Archicad, enabling an integrated BIM workflow for architectural modeling, construction documentation, and coordination throughout the design process.
