Project idea

An architectural memoir of memory exploring how design begins from the quiet depths of memory. The project investigates the Tower of Silence Memory Revitalization, examining how spatial recall and sensory architecture can embed memory into place.

Project description

The project explores the intersection of memory, architecture, and sacred landscape through the revitalization of a Tower of Silence site. It examines why memory must be embedded in site, analyzing the sensory architecture of memory, spatial recall, and emotion-driven design. The design addresses issues of urban redevelopment, erasure of existing fabric, disappearing ritual spaces, loss of cultural identity, and community disconnect. The project proposes a phased evolution of a sacred landscape with distinct zones including sacred zone, remembrance zone, memorial transition, ritual zone, Khandias housing, eco farm, and memorial park. The circulation separates mourners and Khandias, with nodal analysis identifying entry nodes, ritual transitions, threshold ritual to sacred spaces, footpath nodes, and processional pauses. The design unfolds through four phases: Selection and Transition, Acquisition and Growth, Remembrance, and Continuity and Resonance.

Technical information

The project includes stakeholder circulation analysis separating mourners and Khandias circulation paths. Spatial zoning is organized according to character with designated sacred zones, remembrance zones, memorial transition areas, ritual zones, Khandias housing, eco farm, and memorial park. The phased development includes Phase 1 for demolition and build of temporary housing sequences, Phase 2 for acquisition and growth, Phase 3 for remembrance, and Phase 4 for continuity and resonance. Location context analysis includes site mapping and nodal analysis identifying key spatial nodes and processional sequences.
