Project idea

The main idea of the project is to create a new cultural point of attraction on the map, to strengthen Yaroslavl's identity as a city with valuable industrial architecture.

Project description

The Yaroslavl Electric Locomotive Repair Plant conversion project is justified by the need for a new understanding of industrial territories of the 20th century, which, while maintaining their production function, often find themselves isolated from urban life and lose touch with the environment.
At the first stage of the work, the historical, architectural and urban value of the Yaroslavl Electric Locomotive Repair Plant, its role in the development of Yaroslavl, the features of Art Nouveau buildings, the condition of the territory and the adjacent park are considered.
At the second stage, the problems of the territory are analyzed: physical wear, loss of architectural expressiveness and the need to comply with industrial safety.
At the third stage, architectural, restoration, urban planning and landscape solutions are being developed aimed at preserving the historical appearance, functional zoning, landscaping and creation of public, educational and recreational spaces.
The result of the work is the concept of careful development of the existing industrial complex, which allows combining production with new social functions, strengthening the plant's connection with the city, preserving the industrial heritage and improving the quality of the urban environment.

Technical information

Three-dimensional and functional solution

The project preserves the historical spatial structure of the Yaroslavl Electric Locomotive Repair Plant: large production buildings, high spans, tower accents, semicircular attics, extended facades and expressive entrance groups. The main workshops retain the industrial scale and character of Art Nouveau architecture, while gaining new functions: educational, museum, administrative, restaurant and recreational. Existing buildings are being adapted to accommodate halls, auditoriums, exhibition spaces, amphitheaters, catering areas, and community halls. An open-air amphitheater, covered terraces, panoramic glazing, observation decks and landscaped trails form a link between the factory, the park and the urban environment.

Materials, structures and restoration technologies

The main material of the historical buildings is red brick, complemented by white decorative elements, brick profiles, arched and arched lintels, archivolts, cornices, pilasters, paneling and geometric decoration. The project provides for the preservation of brickwork, metal roofs, wrought-iron awnings and fences, metal window frames, wooden sashes, overhang linings and paneled doors. The restoration is based on the principle of scientific restoration: facades are cleaned of late layers, old paint and distorting extensions, authentic elements are preserved, and lost ones are restored from archival photographs, historical analogues and preserved details. The new public spaces use glass, metal, wood and neutral finishing materials that are visually compatible with historical architecture.

Safety, engineering equipment and flow management

The project provides for combining the existing industrial area with public, educational, museum and restaurant functions, therefore, an important solution is to separate the flows of visitors, staff and production processes. The buildings have separate entrances for visitors, employees, administrative and service areas, as well as evacuation exits, spacious halls, stairs, sanitary units, wardrobes and waiting areas. When adapting historical buildings, modern engineering systems are introduced: heating, ventilation, electricity, water supply, sewerage, lighting, fire alarm, security and navigation systems. The territory is zoned into open public areas, controlled routes, recreation areas and closed production areas, which allows the company to keep operating and make part of the factory environment accessible to citizens.
