This project is a museum and center for climate change located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY,NY, USA. Its goal is to educate the public on climate inequity and negative environmental impacts. The project aims to create an educational community space through equitable and sustainable design.
The project seeks to facilitate learning and research for the public through programmatic elements such as exhibit spaces, library, theatre, research labs, children's play area, cafe, retail space and free indoor public access space. The site is designed to create public access to the waterfront via a boardwalk and facilitate climate change conditions like sea level rise. Energy efficiency is addressed through utilization of a green roof, recycled materials, curved photovoltaics and natural water from the East River to generate radiant systems in the floors. A figure 8 ramp wraps around the entire building allowing for a unified and transparent experience for all visitors.
The building is defined by sinusoidal curves, taking advantage of the structural stability provided by curvature. The building is structurally supported by insulated, curved shear concrete walls and the outdoor exhibit areas are enclosed with steel stud walls with a reclaimed cedar facade, the lobby and community spaces are enclosed with glass curtain walls. The roof alternates between doubly curved light troughs, green roof and skylights.
