A museum complex dedicated to the Church of St. John the Baptist in Yaroslavl, combining exhibition spaces, public areas, and a riverside landscape while preserving the historical character of the site.
The project proposes the creation of a contemporary museum complex within the historic surroundings of the Church of St. John the Baptist. The concept is based on the principle of minimal intervention, ensuring that the church remains the dominant architectural landmark. The master plan includes exhibition pavilions, an open-air amphitheater, a riverside restaurant pavilion, recreational areas, pedestrian routes, and a pier for small boats. The project also commemorates the lost winter church through a light installation outlining its historical footprint.
The museum pavilions are designed as lightweight prefabricated structures with steel frames, large glazed facades, and white composite cladding panels. This construction system minimizes the impact on the protected heritage site while providing flexibility, durability, and efficient assembly. The architectural language is intentionally restrained, allowing the historic church to remain the visual focus of the entire complex.
